The children at St Mary’s have two hours of PE timetabled each week. The P.E lessons are designed to cover all aspects of the National Curriculum to develop a range of skills such as dance, gymnastics, invasion games (football, tag rugby) striking and fielding games (rounders, cricket) and net games (tennis / volleyball) and athletics.
Each term the children will get to learn new skills in two areas of the National Curriculum, starting with basic techniques then moving on to small games where they can practice their new skills.
During the school year the school tries to bring in outside coaches to give the children more opportunities at a wider range of sports. This school year we have had Rochdale Football Club, Rochdale Hornets Rugby League, Street Dance and The Tesco FA Skills Coaches in school working with classes from all year groups.
Extra-curricular activities run throughout the school year where Key Stage 2 children get the chance to further their skills and knowledge of the activities that they have worked on during PE.
We are part of the Middleton Primary School Sports Association and the Rochdale Borough School Games Partnership. This is where we compete against other schools in the town and borough in leagues, tournaments and one off events.
In the past school year we have taken part in cross country, football, netball, rugby league, rugby union, hockey, Quicksticks hockey, tri-golf, basketball, rounders and athletics.
